(Woo! I finally got around to starting it!)
Zaene sat in his tent, pondering. If he used his magic to destroy the enemy, he would also destroy the precious minerals that he started this whole war over. And he couldn't have that.
"Holsten, how is the battle coming?"
A rather ragged-looking man nodded, and rushed out of the tent. Zaene sighed. Why had he even bothered leaving the castle and coming to this god-blasted battle. On the plus side, he thought, the troops morale has been better since he arrived. Holsten came back in.
"It's just the same as last time. The line hasn't moved."
Zaene sighed again. "Bring me whoever's in charge of the cavalry. Now!"
Holsten rushed out of the tent.

(About friggin time!)
Koichi was sitting high and mighty on her fox red horse, trying to get the lazy front line to move at least two feet, when the annoyance of raggidy old Holsten showed up, and told her that Zaene was summoning her.
"What for?" she asked annoyed.
"Something about the line not moving."
"Typical." she shook her head but went to Zaene obediently. She found him in a disgruntled mood in his tent.
"Your orders were no magic. If I had had some military tactic training I might have some better ideas, but noooooo. That military school sent me from history to combat practice to home, and you didn't do anything about it. So don't start your ranting to me again! It's not MY fault I wasn't given a chance in a tactics class." she decided to get her argument out before he could stop her this time.

"And still, my front line HASN'T MOVED! Can you tell me why this is, Koichi? Is it the soldiers, or is it their inept leader? I can replace both, if need be."
He smirked. He always had to light a fire under Koichi before she'd actually do anything worthwhile.
"Perhaps, if the line doesn't move soon, I'll use some magic. Maybe."

Somewhere else, in a not so important place surrounded by a lot of less important people, Petula was in the middle of an argument.
"Look, it's not really magic." Petula protested, showing the man a few of the battered cards. "You can check them as much as you want."
"If it's not magic, then how did you get an egg out of Stuey's ear?" the man challenged. "That's Transmutation, that is. That means you're a wizard...person..." His voice trailed off uncertainly, leading the watchers of the argument to believe that perhaps he didn't know as much about the subject as he said he did.
"I'm a magician." Petula said darkly. "Bunnies out of hats, birds out of coins, smashing watches, sawing young ladies in half. That sort of thing."
There were a few blank looks. Petula tried a different approach.
"I'm foreign." She said.
"Ah." The man said, nodding with understanding. Petula would have whacked him upside the head if her entire left arm hadn't gone numb two seconds ago. "Er...does this mean I still have to pay you?"
"Yes." Petula growled.

Asha Furache squinted into the tiny looking-glass as she buttoned up her official uniform's jacket. Black wool, though finely woven, was stiffling in the tiny canvas tent. She brushed a piece of hay off the cloth.
"And the damned cavalry would leave its touch everywhere." She tied her brown plait into a knot on her neck and drew on a pair of kid gloves. Whistling so quietly that the tune was near inaudible, she stepped from the tent and nodded at Alric, the closest she had to a second-in-command. He stood quickly, yet didn't salute.
"Miss?"
She refused to let her own squad of twelve use her title. It bred sloppy habits and careless thinking, qualities that her spy troop couldn't sacrifice.
Asha stretched. The uniform was hot in the stiffling summer air, but the new tailor was exquiste. The five hiden pockets and their contents would indeed come in handy next time some fool tried to cheat her out of her troop's rations or at chess.
"Remove the tent, Alfric. If our Emperor has any sense, we'll be moving out of this riverbed and upstream. We shall, at any rate. I refuse to drown. There's a storm coming."
"Indeed, Miss."
"And I believe that it is time to go deliver my report." She strode towards the more ornate tent. Whoever the Emperor was scolding was certainly far less important than she was. Spy-masters who take care to develop their own methods and codes can become near indispensible.
"Perhaps, if the line doesn't move soon, I'll use some magic. Maybe."
"May I interrupt at this point?" Asha stuck her head in and smiled sweetly at Koichi-- ridiculous, ill-educated upstart that she was-- and Zaene. "Unlike some, I have shown some initiative and wish to report my findings." She leaned against the tent-pole.
((Blah. My first posts are always freaking long, s'rry. Still getting a feel for le character.))

Zaene smirked. "See, Koichi, this is what a soldier is supposed to be like. Perhaps, after this infernal war, I'll have her teach you how to actually be a decent commander. Perhaps you were just meant to befriend, instead of destroy. Now, get out of my sight." Koichi left the tent, in a fury.
"So, my dear Asha, what exactly did you interrupt me for?"

"I swear! Zaene has got to be the most just GAH! I hate him, it's not my fault!"
Holsten was scampering about doing Zaene's bidding and summoning, and Koichi was so mad at him, she sent a quick blue fire shot right at his wooden leg. His howling and hopping brought a happy smile to her face, and she went back to her line, which still had yet to move.
"MOVE IT!"

Zaene stood up, interupting Asha. The cogs in his head were moving at top speed, attempting to calculate a plan.
"Have your people move. I do believe I have an idea." He said as he got out of his chair, and strode towards the opening in the tent, not giving Asha the chance to finish.
This could end this battle. But, in the process, I might accidently wipe out the ore reserve that I came for....
"KOICHI!"

"Left you useless baffoon, Left!" Screeched Koichi.
"Why are we to take orders from a ten year old?!" yelled a soldeir.
"Are you questioning the orders of your Lord and Master Zaene?! Move LEFT!"
As the disgruntled soldier went back to his fighting, she heard Zaene's voice from behind her.
'KOICHI' Oh, perfect what now?!

He walked up to her, but not before flinging a fireball towards the soldier that hadn't listened to Koichi the first time. He promptly caught on fire.
"Koichi, I have a plan." He whispered into her ear, "I want you to look for a fire in the sky. When you see it, call a full retreat."
He grinned broadly after he said it.

"What?! Are you crazy?! How's that going to-?!"
He gave her a look, and she fell silent. It was that look that he always gave when he had a really good idea.
"Whatever you say sir."
The sreeches and howls of agonly rose from the burning soldier.
"Oh, put him out will you?!"

With a wave of his hand, the soldier was struck by lightning.
"Is that better?" Zaene asked, indicating the charred remains of the poor man. Without waiting for a response, he took off at a fast stride towards the highest point of the battlefield.

Have your people move. The woman stared at the top of the tent for a long moment, and then closed her eyes. Counting.
"Indeed, my lord." Asha opened her eyes, and her tone changed slightly as she paced the now-empty tent, cracking her fingers. "Indeed I'll tell my people to move, because it would be madness to stay here. Indeed I shall do nothing about the opposing supply trains and smugglers, despite you having expressly told me to disrupt them two days ago. Indeed I shall move them, though I shan't tell you where I am relocating to. Like it will change anything."
It would not do to be angry. Even if she was more intelligent than the higher command. Even if the higher command had magic, and even if they were damn fools, even if she could get what they came for with half the bodies and thrice the speed--
Asha threw up her hands and stalked back to her small encampment.
But she'd show them. She had the order, after all, didn't she? Have your people move. It meant... anything.
A small crowd was gathered across the row of tent, Alfric and her others mixed in with foot soldiers. A girl brandished a deck of cards.
"Stop watching that drivvle and get going," she snapped at her men, who were clustered around a tall girl with a pack of cards. "Back to your units. My troops, we're moving back... damn civilians... we're moving. And you. Go away, you," she added to the entertainer. "This is a military-only zone. Stiff penalties and everything. Just go."
She paced in the dust, casting glances up at the sky. The storm was coming more quickly than she had anticipated.

Zaene arrived at his destination, albeit he slowed a bit towards the end. He wiped the sweat from his eyes, and turned towards the battlefield.
"Now, the fun begins." He said, throwing a line of fire into the sky.

The stinking carcus of the rude soldier stinking up her air, caused her to mount her horse to escape the smell, which didn't work. She sat on her horse, and watched her men writhing in a hopeless battle against numbers that had no chance of defeating by hand alone. As she sat, a streak of fire shot across the sky, the sign...
She spun a blue fire sheild and called the retreat, riding through the ranks of men avoiding the shots of the enemy, and the imcompatence of her men. Her men fell back, as the enemy seized the oppertunity to give a celebritory cheer.
"Zaene, you better have one damn good plan."
