Not necisarily. The two can be coexistant. Science [glow=blue,2,300]FICTION![/glow]
Anyway, if it is in a different world or something and it has future-like technology, what makes that Science Fiction?

They can coexist, as in a book having elements of each genre, but I hate it when bookstores lump Star Wars and Tolkien together under a sign reading 'science fiction.' One is science fiction, the other is clearly fantasy.
Science fiction generally depends upon technology. It's like, 'this is possible, given the correct level and advancements in technology,' but if it's not really possible, it's probably fantasy. Again, you can get them blending together.
I guess I see where it would be hard to shelve the books, then, because some fall into each category, but it still bothers me.

Another thing is that Science Fiction might happen or has a base of realism, while most other Fictions (exept for Realistic/Historical Fiction, hence the name) have no base of realism and couldn't actually happen.

Yes! I have heard of it! IT IS AN AWESOME BOOK!
I have a question for you all: I have written two chapters for a story I think might be a cool story. It is about a a group of intersteller "refugees" trying to restart their civilization (not humans, but look-a-likes). They were sent off to search for and colonize a star system, but a hundred years after they leave, the "Home System" government blows itself up in a civil war, completely wiping them out exept for the ship. They then have to go through many tough adventures to find a new home.
So what do you think? Fiction or Sci-Fi?

Sci-fi. Definately.
By the way, I'm reading Ursula K. LeGuin's The Telling right now. Can anyone tell me-- are all of her books as clumpy and stuffy? I don't find myself a fan of her style, though some of her ideas are interesting.
